Martha Kim

Martha Kim joined Stanford’s Office of General Counsel in April 2024 where she primarily advises on faculty affairs (including employment matters related to faculty), immigration/visas, research misconduct, political activities and litigation. Prior to joining Stanford, Martha served as Senior Principal Counsel at the University of California Office of the President where she advised on a wide variety of labor and employment matters, including graduate student unionization, work authorization/immigration, medical leaves, disability accommodation and faculty matters. Martha also served as Associate General Counsel at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, where she handled labor and employment matters before state and federal court and various governmental agencies. Prior to practicing in higher education, Martha was Associate Deputy General Counsel at the United States Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. where she advised the Office of the Secretary of Defense with regard to detention policy matters and litigation involving habeas petitions, national security law, international law and constitutional and statutory law. Upon graduating from law school, Martha worked at Dewey Ballantine LLP and at the Southern Poverty Law Center, focusing on commercial and civil rights litigation.  

Martha received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1999 and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2003. Martha is admitted to the state bars of New Jersey, California and to the United States Supreme Court.
