Lauren Schoenthaler

Senior University Counsel, Legal Services
Ms. Schoenthaler joined Stanford’s legal office in 2001 and practices general higher education law, concentrating on university policy, copyright, privacy, dispute resolution, police matters, and student matters. From 2016 – 2021, Ms. Schoenthaler served as Senior Associate Vice Provost of Institutional Equity and Access overseeing Stanford’s offices that work to prevent and respond to instances of harassment or discrimination.

Ms. Schoenthaler is an expert in policy development and drafting. In addition to policy work at Stanford, Ms. Schoenthaler has assisted with the drafting of state legislation and a national model code. She was on the American Bar Association’s Task Force on Campus Sexual Misconduct. Ms. Schoenthaler is a frequent speaker on sexual harassment and copyright matters for organizations such as NACUA and ACE. In a volunteer capacity and as the mother of two young adult sons, Ms. Schoenthaler speaks frequently to youth organizations about the development of sexual citizenship, “Upstanding” principles, and what to expect at college.

Prior to Stanford, Ms. Schoenthaler clerked for the Honorable A. Wallace Tashima at both the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Central District of California. She was an associate at an international law firm (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman) and served as a Deputy District Attorney in Santa Clara County.

In 2016-17, Ms. Schoenthaler took part in the Stanford Leadership Academy, a year-long program led by Stanford GSB emeritus faculty. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, and her law degree (magna cum laude) from Hastings College of the Law where she was an editor of the Hastings Law Journal and a member of Order of the Coif.
